Equipment Needed for Retail Stores

Equipment Needed for Retail Stores
Retail stores need diverse equipment to operate smoothly. Before you can open for business, you need to acquire all the necessary tools, whether hangers and mannequins for a clothing store, or simply office furniture and supplies. However, certain equipment is essential for any retail business to avoid theft and organize transactions with customers.
Cash Register
o    A retail store needs a cash register. This is because the machine not only helps you calculate the cost of the customers' purchases and the change due, but it also records all business transactions. Retailers need the latter both for personal use, to determine your business strategy based on profits and losses, and for tax purposes. In addition, cash registers also issue the mandatory receipts for customers, and can help prevent employee theft.
Credit Card Reader
o    American consumers held 609 million credit cards as of January 2010, according to the U.S. Federal Reserve. Therefore, a credit card reader is an important piece of equipment for retail stores. Such equipment can either be mag stripe readers, which requires you to swipe the card and have customers sign a copy of the receipt, or "Chip and PIN" readers, with which customers type their PIN to complete the transaction.
Electronic Article Surveillance
o    Electronic article surveillance refers to technology recognizing an item and notifying retailers when the item crosses a certain area. For example, when retailers place special tags on their merchandise and install sensors on the store's doorways, an alarm goes off when someone passes through the gate without removing the sensor. Electronic article surveillance is a highly effective method of preventing shoplifting.
Video Surveillance
o    Video surveillance can also help retailers tackle shoplifters. Shoplifters can often remove the surveillance tags from merchandise and therefore pass through the door undetected, especially in very busy shops, when it is difficult for personnel to keep an eye on every customer. However, surveillance cameras help employees monitor the store, and serve as evidence during prosecution of shoplifters.
